I ate a lot of donuts the second half of this year. Mostly because I traveled to a lot of states (18!) and made a valiant effort to try a new donut in each one.
All of the donuts and all of the travel were equal parts celebration and work. As I embarked on Fifty Feminist States, each new state was a celebratory moment (my greatest creative endeavor yet!) and also a challenge — new states meant new episodes and new calls to empty myself of all expectations and exude empathy in order to hear the stories I came to record.
There’s so much to reflect on from my travels (that’s coming in 2019!) but for now, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge all the work and progress from 2018! So here we go:
37 folks interviewed in 16 states.
Endless thanks to Coop, Alex, Amber, Colleen, Jessica, Amy, Aspen, Diane, Ladonna, Wiljar, Toni, Rachel, Raechel, Melody, Cheeky, Kitty, Beth, Julia, Sarah, Brooklyn, Ashley, Emma, Lucia, Crystal, Claudette, Micky, Lakshmi, Cheryl, Paige, Sam, Alexandra, Red, Wanda, Joyce, Deborah, Ashleigh and Danielle for sharing their time with me…
Almost 15,000 miles driven.
…in Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and North Carolina.
Over 50 hours of audio recorded + seven episodes released.
Season one was focused on the Midwest, and season two will feature states from the Northeast and New England. In spring there will also be a special episode from North Carolina!
More than 2500 downloads + 13 five-star reviews on iTunes.
I’m so appreciative of everyone who’s listened, shared, and reviewed the first episodes. But building an audience for a podcast is hard, so if you know a great PR person to help me promote season two, I’m looking for one!
And endless thanks yet again to the 119 backers that donated $5796 to get this project started!
I wrapped up Kickstarter fulfillment in December and learned so much about that process along the way. Look for another fundraising campaign in 2019 for seasons three and four!
